Hygiene and Periodontology

Features and causes of periodontal diseases

Periodontal disease is one of the most common diseases in the world.

There are several reasons for this:

  • irregular oral hygiene
  • improperly selected personal hygiene products
  • hormonal imbalance, stress
  • irregular visits to the dentist
  • the development of periodontal diseases is also facilitated by malocclusion, secondary adentia, systemic diseases and other pathological processes. Periodontal problems are divided into 3 large groups:
  • Gingivitis (gum disease)
  • Periodontitis
  • Periodontal disease gingivitis is the initial stage of periodontitis. Subject to regular professional hygiene and correctly selected individual oral care, gingivitis is a reversible process.
Thus, if you have recently noticed bleeding gums during brushing, redness and sensitivity during meals, this is an occasion to undergo examination by a periodontist, conduct timely diagnosis and stop the inflammatory process. In the case if the symptoms of gingivitis are ignored, the disease progresses and periodontitis occurs – an inflammatory process that spreads to the entire complex of tissues surrounding the tooth, including bone tissue. Inflammation leads to destruction of the alveolar ridge and gum recession, as a result of which the neck of the tooth is exposed, sensitivity appears, which in turn enhances the inflammatory process.
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that may not manifest itself for many years and be detected by a dental examination.

Periodontal Disease Treatment

Periodontic status is determined by the periodontist during your first visit to the clinic and, if certain problems are found, the doctor recommends professional hygiene and an examination every 3 months. Thus, it is possible to observe in dynamics whether the process is moving towards improvement after professional hygiene, whether personal hygiene products are effectively selected, or periodontal treatment is necessary.

Professional hygiene is both an independent preventive measure, and a preparatory stage before further treatment, consists of:

  • removal of supragingival and subgingival dental deposits using an ultrasound system.
  • cleansing the tooth from staining pigments (using Air-Flow) and subsequent polishing

Periodontal therapy

Periodontic treatment consists of removing hard dental deposits below the gingival level, excising granulations (a product of inflammation) and drug therapy.

The main procedure for periodontal diseases is curettage, the purpose of which is to excise pathologically changed tissues of the periodontal pocket, bacterial deposits and plaque, as well as antibiotic therapy.
One treatment option is laser curettage. It allows you to simultaneously excise granulation and carry out antimicrobial therapy in pockets even in the most inaccessible places with minimal interference with periodontal tissue, while coagulating blood and having an antiseptic effect on pathogenic microflora. Thus, the procedure brings minimal discomfort and the shortest rehabilitation time.

Also a treatment option is Vector therapy. It is used as an independent treatment in the first stage of periodontitis, and as a supporting procedure after curettage. It is an ultrasonic removal of dental plaque with a simultaneous supply of the drug deep into the pocket. The procedure is painless and does not require any rehabilitation period.
